Guest Post | Autumn Beauty: How To Protect Your Hair From Colder Weather

Why hello, autumn, we haven’t seen you in a while. We hope you’re planning your winter wardrobe now because things are about to get very cold, very quickly. Before you know it, there’ll be Christmas ads at the beginning of September…and we’ll want to club the marketing companies with a particularly hot pair of hair straighteners.

Speaking of hair, have you got your toiletry cupboard ready for rain, ice, and snow? It’s time to start organising your winter hair care to encompass a range of frosty conditions. Unless you want hair like It this holiday season (not a good look).

Condition Like Crazy

Are you guilty of neglecting your weekly deep conditioner? As soon as the colder months start drying out your hair, you’ll be sorry you didn’t smooth out your strands. Obviously, no amount of conditioner will get rid of your split ends – only a trip to the hairdresser’s will sort that out – but it will smooth out each cuticle to give the impression of sleek, shiny locks.

Time Out From Showers

Feel free to take as many showers as you like – this article isn’t about taking care of your skin – just keep your hair out of the water. The shampoo treatment will strip all the natural oils from your scalp (sorely needed in autumn), leaving your hair dull and brittle. If possible, use dry shampoo to squeeze out another day away from the faucet.

Hot Tools

We both know that hot tools are really bad for our hair, but this is particularly true in autumn. Try to air dry your locks as much as possible before resorting to the dryer. Preferably, go without completely.

The only exception to this rule is if it’s chilly outside and you’ll have to leave with wet hair. In icy temperatures, your hair can freeze completely which is extremely bad for your locks.

Cosy Knits

Those who suffer from dry skin find the colder weather quite challenging, as it dries out the body. Protect your scalp from the elements by knitting a few hats for the autumn! Well, you could buy a few warm hats instead, but this approach is much more fun.

So, you might get hat hair…but that’s the sacrifice you have to make for staying warm and cosy. If this is a problem for you, stow a little moisturising hair product in your bag to smooth flyaways.

Eat Well

Autumn is the season for hearty soups and stews, so make sure you pack your dishes full of healthy nutrients. One of the best ways to protect your hair from the cold weather is to eat really well. The healthier you are, the stronger your hair will be. If you need a little nutritional help, make sure you take dietary supplements, but these are in no way a substitute for a bad diet.

  1. Great ideas! My hair is so damaged from all the bleach, and color. I try to air dry most of the my hair, but I end up using the blow dryer in the end. I'm glad Summer is almost over. It's been really hot where I live.
