Dying for UGGs?‏

UGGs. We hate 'em. They are not only UGGly but also cruel.

UGG boots are made of sheepskin (yep, someone's skin, people!). The sheep who are killed for UGGs are often Merino sheep—just like Pete (pictured here). Every year, millions of sheep are castrated, have their tails cut off, and have their horns hot-branded. Once sheep are no longer needed in the sheepskin industry, they are shot or have their throats slit—all for the sake of a pair of boots.

Every purchase of UGG boots supports extreme cruelty to animals—not to mention that wearing someone's dead skin is just gross. With so many cute and cruelty-free options available, there's no reason to wear the skin of an abused animal.

Take a stand against UGGs! Fill out this form to pledge never to wear UGG boots, and let your friends know that they can help sheep, too, by buying cruelty-free boots and never buying wool.

  2. @♥ Raeven : I know, most people wear those without even knowing that they are made of sheepskin! I don't blame them - or you!- though, as I'm sure UGG is not advertising this...

  3. What about knit ones? I'm quite torn because yes I think the cruelty aspect is disturbing, but I also think that it's just something that humans do and always have done to keep warm. Fair enough though, that today, there are alternatives and it's done on a massive scale as opposed to in the past.

  5. @MakeYuUp: I'm talking about the one made of sheepskin, not the knit ones. But like you said, there's tons of cruelty-free alternatives.

  8. @Gertrude: I know, lots of people weren't even aware that those boots were made of sheepskin! Thanks for the follow (=

@ltranxx : Thanks, I'm glad you like my blog! I never liked Uggs either but this totally proves me right hehe!

  9. I an anti-Ugg person as it is, but never thought about the way they were made, despite knowing it's advertised as real sheepskin/fur. Well done for this post, this definitely needs more awareness! xxx

  10. @Michelle : I understand, and I'm glad I could learn you something - as ugly as it is )=

  11. i have never actually though about this! luckily i only buy the $25 ugg boots from cotton on body, allll synthetic! :)

  12. Urgh that's sick :\ I'm not wearing them ever again! Are the fake one's also sheep skin or are they okay to wear? x

  13. wow that's horrible! luckily I live in a warm country. there's no reason for us here to wear uggs, lol. thanks for spreading the awareness :)

  14. Thank you for telling us about them using sheep furs! Luckily, I don't own any... hehe~

  15. :( I already thought these boots were ugly, and now I *really* don't wanna hear about them anymore. I didn't know they were made out of animal skin, I thought they were synthetic.. So sad!!

And the irony of this post, is that in my Google Reader, the Ad Sense at the end of the article was for cheap Ugg boots in London. Argh! *spit*

  18. J'avoue, je n'ai jamais compris cette mode des Ugg, je trouve ça particulièrement laid!
Après, si on tiens vraiment à en avoir, il y a des copies en synthétique très bien faites et beaucoup moins chers!

  19. I never really liked animal skin made products :( it just makes me sad && I'm such an animal lover

  20. @Christina Marie : Wow, I'm glad this got you to stop wearing them! Lots of people wear them without even knowing what they are truly made of. The fake ones are supposed to be made of synthetic fur, so yes, they are okay to wear. (=

    @Fifi: Yes, insanely horrible. )=

@Ahleessa: I don't own any either, and I never will!

@GabZ1985 : Sadly, the real UGGs are made of sheepskin. But sure, you can find cruelty-free alternatives, and they are just the same, and sooo much cheaper! I know about Ad Sense, I tried blocking the URL of uggstore.com but other stores keep popping up -_-'

@ellie walker: I'm glad this got you to realise it. Eveyrbody needs to know what they do to those poor animals!

    @roshas : I'm glad you liked it (=

@Nadine Natalin: Me neither! And those boots are just so ugly anyway!

  21. I own 6 pairs of ugg's boots and I dont think it's wrong to wear them. If you think about it anyway they would end up dying for meat and the bits they use culd be taken from sheep that are already dead/ dying. So in a way they are just using all of the sheep up so then none is wasted. Also people wear leather all the time without relasing and people eat sheep even though the meat has been chopped up. Not trying to offend anyone just saying my opinion x

    ReplyDelete
  22. @" A beauty blogger named Justine " : Thanks for sharing your opinion, Justine. The fact is that they don't use the skin of sheeps that are already dead, they KILL them for their skin. That is terribly wrong. And I'm totally against leather, and I don't eat sheeps.

  23. Just wanted to say that this is a wonderful post; sheep are too cute to be cruelly killed like that to be worn on our feet. Uggs are fugly anyway, I don't understand why anyone would wear them. Just a side note, but I think it's pretty ironic that there is a Google ad for Uggs right underneath this post as I speak lol. And thanks for subscribing to my blog, I'm following yours also :)

  24. @Rinny : I'm glad to see lots of people are on my side on this! And I know about Ad Sense, I tried blocking the URL of uggstore.com but other stores keep popping up anyway. I feel so stupid now -_-'

  27. I completly agree with you, I think Uggs look awful as well. I didnt know they were made from sheepskin though. Being veggie myself I wouldnt wear them anyway. Its good your getting the word out there for people who didnt know though.

    ReplyDelete
  28. @Enigma : Yes, a lot of people didn't even knoe those boots were made of sheepskin. I don't think UGGs advertises this very much, though...

  29. Omgoodness I didnt undertsand that they just kill them for shoes :/ I cant stop wearing them beucase they are my only winter shoes but I will try and find alternatives :) Thank you for following :) x

  30. never liked UGG until I saw totally different model of them and though of buying it as an alternative to MUKLUK boots made out of canadian bunnies...also not my cup of tea! But now after reading this and signing the petition I think I'll just get THE HUNTER boots and buy an inner sock...!thanks!
    xoxo

    ReplyDelete
  31. @" A beauty blogger named Justine " : Sadly, that's what happen with most animals killed for clothes. I understand that they are your only winter shoes, and you didn't know about that anyway, nobody will blame you! But yes, there's plenty of synthetic alternatives.

@Catita : I have never heard of MUKLUK before... but awww, those poor bunnies! Are you serious?! That's awful! Oh yes the Hunter boots are pretty and stylish!

  32. Haha that's easy for me to fill out as I've always hated Ugg boots. But I will.

  33. OMG, those articles actually made me cry... That is absolutely terrible. I was considering getting a pair of the knit UGGs, but knowing that they are made by a company that supports this, I have reconsidered. Thank you for sharing this.

  34. @Angeltea7: Yey, I'm glad you're on my side on this! Thanks for taking the time to sign the pledge (=

@Straight Up Glam: I know, I don't even watch the videos anymore, I can't, it's just too hard. I don't need to see it to believe it anyway. Humans are just so stupid. I'm glad you have reconsidered getting a pair of UGGs. There's plenty of similar synthetic alternatives out there!

  35. I don't have a pair of UGGs and Dale was mentioning that he hopes to never see me in a pair because he thinks they're UGggly LOL
I didn't know they were made of sheepskin. Well, I can't say I'm animal-skin free. Many of my shoes are leather. But I'd like to think that UGG doesn't just kill sheep for the skin alone and the meat isn't eaten....like lamb chops will always be sold and eaten - I'm always a supporter of the fact that if meat is eaten, the skin should be used too and maybe the bones as well if possible. I wouldn't consider it cruel if the animals were killed humanely and the meat was eaten and the skin was made for boots per say....I'd be a hypocrite if I said otherwise since as I said, I do wear leather shoes. But at the same time, you know that I'm an animal lover and don't support any animal cruelty.

    ReplyDelete
  36. @Karen : I totally get your point Karen, and like you, maybe I would be a little more comprehensive if the every part of the animal was used, but most of the time, it's not. In this case, sheeps are killed only for clothes, and that's something I will never understand )=
