November 26 is Fur-Free Friday!

Every year, millions of rabbits, minks, dogs, cats, and other animals are bludgeoned, gassed, anally or vaginally electrocuted, and sometimes even skinned alive—just to be made into coats, bags, and other accessories that no one needs.

November 26 is Fur-Free Friday, a worldwide day of action against the fur industry.

What's wrong with fur?

Life on a fur farm ain't no life at all for all the cute critters forced to live there.

Animals bred and raised on fur farms spend their entire lives in cramped, filthy wire cages. They are denied proper shelter and clean water, and they can't do any of the things that come naturally to them—such as climbing, burrowing, and swimming. They endure fear and stress and often suffer from disease, parasite infestations, and other physical and psychological hardships, all for the sake of an unnecessary industry that makes billions of dollars annually.

In the U.S., no federal humane slaughter law protects animals on fur factory farms, so animals are killed in the cruelest ways possible in order to save money and keep their skins in one piece. Many have their skulls bashed in or their necks broken, and others are anally or vaginally electrocuted.

Contrary to fur-industry propaganda, fur production destroys the environment. Producing a real fur coat from the skins of ranch-raised animals takes a heap more energy than that needed to produce a fake-fur garment. Real fur isn't biodegradable, either, thanks to the chemicals used to stop the fur from rotting. These chemicals can also contaminate local water supplies.

Simply put, fur ain't no good for animals or the planet!

  1. When I worked at a dry cleaner's, they had a partnership with a place that cleaned fur coats and other fur items. I just *hated* when it was time to get the coats and give out the coats. There would be like 60-80 coats on racks, and I had to look through the pockets of each to find the proper invoice when the customer would come to pick it up. I would have to go through the racks, and the fur touching my arms felt so disgusting to me! It felt like they had hung dead dogs all around me... Eww!! I really don't understand the attraction people have for fur...

  3. c'est sur que je ne porterai jamais des vetements avec de la fourrure (faux ou pas). C'est pas beau.

Les images sont sanglantes o.O je suis sensible de voir un animal abattu >.<

  4. What about antique furs? I would never buy (non-synthetic) fur, but I was recently given my grandmother's mink stole. I want to be able to wear it without people thinking I'm some horrible animal-killing monster. These minks have been dead for over 50 years!

I agree that there's no need to continue the fur industry, but please don't assume that everyone who wears fur hates tiny animals.

  6. Great post. I'm right there with you when it comes to fur....it's also important to remember that a lot of our meats can come from factory farms so we need to shop for food in places that get meats from humanely run farms.

  8. @GabZ1985: Awww I totally get what you mean. I would have felt the same if I were at your place )= I don't understand why people love to wear fur... it isn't even pretty!

@charmed-chick : Me too, for sure!!

@MakeupJunkie88 : Well I'm glad you know the truth now. Rabbit coats... ))),=

@petitechouxx : Je suis de ton avis, y'a rien de beau là-dedans de toutes façons, je ne comprends juste pas. Désolée pour les images choquantes, mais c'est parfois la seule façon d'ouvrir les yeux aux gens.

@Emily : Antique fur is still fur and it still involves animal cruelty. Yes, those minks have been dead for over 50 years, but they died for this coat, and that's disgusting. I don't assume that because you wear fur you hate animals... did I ever mention this? When it comes to animals, I have very strong opinions.

@gingerSnap : I hate animal cruelty, too. Thanks for being a follower since the start (=

@Angeltea7: I agree, but I don't really eat meat anyway.

@Katie Renee : Seriously? Well I'm glad I could teach you something, even if it's not a happy thing )=

  9. Great post! This is very true.
The other day I saw a feature on TV about some Ed Hardy jacket that claims to not use actual fur but it actually was.. I think that's so shameful on that desinger's/Ed Hardy's part.

  13. That's really awful how inhumane some animals are killed for fur or for whatever reason. I'm not a vegetarian but I feel like animals when killed for food, should be killed in a more humane way. When I think about it too much, it makes me want to eat less meat of course....it's a struggle as I am not a vegetarian...but I don't wear fur and I'm very much against animal cruelty. I think animal cruelty also includes animals kept in unsanitary conditions and neglected :(
