We all love our beauty products. From the newest moisturizer to the hottest lipstick shade, I know that I, personally, can never get enough of a good thing. Unfortunately, though, most of the products we love also contain ingredients that are not the best for our beauty or health. If you haven’t taken a moment to do some research into the exact ingredients in your beauty products, here are five reasons to learn more:

1. Avoid toxins and known carcinogens.

While we may not realize it until we do a bit of research, almost all of the most popular skin care and beauty products are riddled with ingredients that are extremely harmful to our health. Most are additives included to make a product look better, stay creamier, or retain a specific color or consistency. Not only are these ingredients used for unnecessary purposes, they have been found to be extremely toxic and linked to cancer. These additives are not regulated and are mostly used as a way to make more products faster and more cheaply.

2. Don’t waste money.

Knowing exactly what’s in the products you buy and understanding whether or not those ingredients are helping or hurting your body is huge when it comes to budgeting. Why waste your money on products that claim to help your skin and body, when they are actually causing harm? These types of ingredients are not limited to drug stores and knock-offs. They can be found in some of the most expensive products in the world. It’s much better to use your hard-earned cash on products that will actually do what they say they’ll do.

3. Use the products you purchase with confidence.

Once you do your research and choose products that are non-toxic and natural, you will be able to use them confidently without worry that they are harmful. When it comes to the ingredients in your products, once you know what’s really going on, it’s hard to turn back. I know that I’ve found myself using name brand products, knowing they contained harmful additives, and it never escaped the back of my mind.

4. Learn to make your own.

When you know the types of things that should and shouldn’t be going into your products, you can begin to find ways to make your own concoctions. There are plenty of resources online. One I love is Gorgeouslygreen.com. Making your own beauty products requires a bit of an investment at first, but the end result is so worth it. The satisfaction of knowing exactly what’s in your products is wonderful. And being able to whip up your own products right when you need them is great.

5. Support honest and respectful companies.

While it may be a reach to claim that common manufacturers of beauty products are being blatantly disrespectful and dishonest by including such harmful ingredients in their skin care. But, it is safe to say that companies who make the effort to only create healthy products are doing their part to be respectful and honest businesses. Support these efforts by buying products from companies that care.

  3. Awesome tips! I really like #4 -- I've been intrigued about creating and experimenting on my own bath/body/skincare products for some time, but I'm really not sure if I have the skills to do that. :p

  4. These are great tips about buying beauty products. A lot of the products I purchase are from the cosmetic counter so I usually ask, but if it smells to heavily fragrant then I won't buy it. First time visiting, great blog, just followed and hope you'll stop by!
